White Monastery

Founded by the highly renowned Saint Shenoute, this large monastery built of dressed white limestone has been significantly resilient throughout the history of Egypt. It has been repeatedly damaged and repaired across the centuries from the attacks of different conquerors of Egypt. Despite this, it has remained and continues to hold the history of being the monastery that had one of the largest literacy programs of its era, with its current library being the largest in the Christian world.
