Populated for approximately 5,000 years, its ancient name during the Ptolemaic era was Myos Hormos. Historically, it was an important route connecting Egypt and the Red Sea, to the Silk Road, Arabia, and the Horn of Africa; being the most direct route from the Nile to the Red Sea at 200km.
